How the Rankings work (RFORCE Index):

The RFORCE Index congregates all the data available from the Robot Events website to produce a team’s RFORCE Rating (RFR).

A team’s RFR fluctuates throughout the season as different teams compete in Events and score points in various ways, and is used to generate the rankings available on the RFORCE website.

The Index’s objective is:

  1. To measure a Team’s complete performance quality by capturing all possible contributions within their respective competition (awards, teamwork scores, skills, etc.)

  2. Be a standardized rating that is comparable throughout multiple Seasons, regardless of the season’s particular challenge.

  3. Recognize each individual Member of a team and differentiate their respective contributions.

  4. Rank Teams and Members using the RFR to highlight the best of the best.

Teams earn points by competing in Events in a season. A team’s points are then averaged over all the Events they participated in to create their standing RFORCE Rating.

Teams in the Vex Robotics Competition(VRC) receive points from Awards and Rankings, affected by coefficients (Tournament Rating and Event Number). Athletes are attributed their respective points based on their Primary Role on their Team.

Here’s how an RFORCE Rating is generated:

Teams earn points by winning Awards and climbing the Rankings at each Event they compete in:

Awards (empirical value determined using the REC Foundation’s descriptions):

  • 12 pts = Excellence Award

  • 10 pts = Teamwork Finals Champion*

  • 10 pts = Robot Skills Champion*

  • 9 pts = Design Award

  • 7 pts = Amaze, Innovate, and Think Awards

  • 5 pts = Create and Build Awards

  • 3 pts = Judges Award

  • 1 pt = Inspire, Sportsmanship, and Energy Awards

*Applied through the Rankings points distribution

Rankings (Qualifications, Finals, and Robot Skills):

10 pts are distributed for each rank in one event.

  • #1 rank team ALWAYS receives 10 points, and each rank forth receives a portion of 10 pts, based on rank.

Formula: [1 + (total # of teams) – (team’s rank)] / [total # of teams] * 10

  • Rounded to the nearest tenth

*Winning Finals Championship and Robot Skills Awards is the result of placing first, and therefore does not earn bonus points.*

Example (event with 50 teams):

  • Let’s look at the RF pts earned by the top 3 teams in each category at this event

Qualifications (all 50 teams participate):

  • #1 rank: [1 + (50) – (1)] / [50] * 10 = 10 pts

  • #2 rank: [1 + (50) – (2)] / [50] * 10 = 9.8 pts

  • #3 rank: [1 + (50) – (3)] / [50] * 10 = 9.6 pts

Finals (top 20 teams participate, 10 alliances):

  • #1 rank: [1 + (10) – (1)] / [10] * 10 = 10 pts

  • #2 rank: [1 + (10) – (2)] / [10] * 10 = 9.5 pts

  • #3 rank: [1 + (10) – (3)] / [10] * 10 = 9 pts

Robot Skills (hypothetical; only 38 teams participate):

  • #1 rank: [1 + (38) – (1)] / [38] * 10 = 10 pts

  • #2 rank: [1 + (38) – (2)] / [38] * 10 = 9.74 pts

  • #3 rank: [1 + (38) – (3)] / [38] * 10 = 9.47 pts

**Allows for incremental and proportional rank valuation; eliminates tie-breakers and rewards Teams marginally for each rank climbed, as well as appropriately for each category**

These points are then affected by Coefficients. *varies by event.

Tournament RFORCE Rating: RForce Event Rating (RFER) is composed of the sum of all Team’s Average Event Scores that are participating in that event. This ensures that Event Size and Event Difficulty, based on the number of teams attending and their rating, is accounted for. Event Type is also taken into account.

1. Event Difficulty (RFER rating of Teams at that Event) – measurement of the level of competition.

2. Event Size (number of Teams competing at that Event)

Formula: log(Average of total current ratings of teams attending event)

**Rewards Teams for participating in events with more difficult competition**

Event Type/Level (Minimum Cap – applicable to Local Events only)

1x – Local / League / Signature

1.5x – State / Regional

1.75x – National

2x – Worlds

Athletes are attributed points based on how their team’s Event Score was composed at an Event.

Attribution (how RF pts are attributed to Athletes, Coaches, and Organizations)

Used as the proxy for each Athlete Type. Based on the Awards or Ranking, we want to reward and distinguish those who took the lead in that particular category, even if the Award is given to the team as a whole; defined by the REC Foundation Award descriptions and common sense.

  • Drivers: All Rankings (except Skills Programming Rank), Excellence and Amaze

  • Programmers: Skills Programming Rank, Excellence, Design, Innovate, Amaze, and Think Award

  • Builders: All Rankings, Excellence, Design, Innovate, Amaze, Build, and Create

  • Coaches: All Rankings, All Awards, Individual Awards (Mentor of the Year + Others**) *Must be given to a Coach

  • Organizations (For all teams within): All Rankings, All Awards, Individual Awards (Partner of the Year + Mentor of the Year + Others**) *Must be given to a member within organization

**Generates the Athlete, Coach, and Organization Rankings**

A team’s Final Event Score for that event is then calculated. Averaging Event scores throughout the season gives the team’s RF Rating (Elo), which is then used to compose the rankings. A team’s RF Rating can go fluctuate during the season.
